Quick answer: Mobile dog grooming does cost more than a drop-off salon. At our North Texas Kontota location a full groom runs $153.12 to $289.08 by weight, with a $119.99 visit minimum. What the difference buys is roughly four hours of your own time, one dog groomed at a time with no kennel wait, and no car ride. It is worth it if your schedule is tight, your dog is large, nervous or elderly, or you have more than one dog. It is not worth it if you live five minutes from a groomer you trust and your dog travels happily. See the full pricing page for every figure.
If you have compared mobile grooming prices with salon prices, you noticed mobile costs more. The fair question is whether having a groomer come to you is worth the gap.
For a lot of households it is, but not for all of them, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. Here is the actual trade.
What does mobile dog grooming cost?
| Dog’s weight | Bath only, short coat | Bath only, long coat | Full groom with haircut |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 15 lbs | $78.97 | $91.33 | $153.12 |
| 16 to 25 lbs | $91.33 | $116.04 | $165.48 |
| 25 to 40 lbs | $103.69 | $140.76 | $177.84 |
| 41 to 60 lbs | $128.40 | $165.48 | $190.20 |
| 61 to 70 lbs | $140.76 | $177.84 | $202.56 |
| 71 to 80 lbs | $153.12 | $190.20 | $214.92 |
| 81 to 90 lbs | $165.48 | $202.56 | $227.28 |
Haircut prices include the bath, so you are not billed twice. Every visit has a $119.99 minimum. Tax of 8.25% and a 3% fuel surcharge apply at checkout, and seniors and veterans get $10 off. Prices are for our North Texas franchise and may differ at other Kontota locations.
Why does mobile grooming cost more than a salon?
It comes down to how the two businesses work.
A salon operates from one building and can groom six to ten dogs across a day, sharing the same bathing equipment, drying stations and overhead. Spreading costs across more dogs is what makes a lower price possible.
A mobile van is a small salon on wheels. It carries its own water, generator, bathing setup, drying tools and climate control to every address, and it grooms one dog per appointment. Add vehicle maintenance, fuel, travel time and scheduling around individual households.
You are not paying someone to drive to your house. You are paying for a complete grooming operation that comes to you and works on your dog alone.
Mobile grooming versus a drop-off salon
| Mobile grooming | Drop-off salon | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Higher | Lower |
| Dogs groomed at once | One | Six to ten |
| Kennel wait between stages | None | Common |
| Cage dryers | Not used | Often used |
| Trips across town for you | None | Two |
| Your time on grooming day | Answer the door | Half a day |
| Same groomer each visit | Yes | Whoever is rostered |
| Price published before you book | Yes | Rarely |
| Quality of the haircut | Depends on the groomer | Depends on the groomer |
Be clear about that last row. Mobile grooming does not automatically produce a better haircut. A good groom depends on the groomer’s skill, your dog’s coat and the service performed. What mobile changes is everything around the appointment.
What the price difference actually buys
Your afternoon back
A salon appointment is a drive there, a drop-off, a wait for the call, and a drive back. In Frisco, McKinney or Prosper with Dallas-Fort Worth traffic in the middle, that is realistically three to four hours of your day gone. Mobile grooming costs you the time it takes to open the front door.
One dog at a time
Many salons run several dogs at once, with waiting before and after. Some dogs are completely fine with that. Others get wound up by the noise and activity. In the van your dog has the groomer’s attention for the whole appointment and no kennel time between stages.
No car ride
For dogs that hate the car, grooming day starts badly before anyone touches a brush. Mobile removes that step entirely. Your dog walks a few feet from the house into the van.
The same groomer
Seeing the same person each visit matters more than people expect, particularly for dogs that take a while to settle. Your coat notes, your entry instructions and your dog’s quirks stay with the appointment.

Who gets the most value from mobile grooming?
| Your situation | Is mobile worth it? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Packed work schedule, nobody free for drop-off and pickup | Yes | The time saved is the whole product |
| Large dog that is hard to load into a car | Yes | Transport is often the hardest part of grooming day |
| Anxious dog, or one that hates the car | Usually | Removes the ride, the waiting and the other dogs |
| Senior dog with mobility issues | Yes | A few feet to the van instead of a car journey |
| Two or more dogs | Yes | One visit instead of coordinating several |
| Small easygoing dog, trusted groomer five minutes away | Probably not | You are paying for convenience you already have |
| Lowest possible price is the priority | No | A salon will be cheaper, and that is a legitimate choice |
Mobile grooming and large dogs
If you have ever tried to get a 90 lb dog into a vehicle that it had decided against, you already understand the appeal.
Large dogs still cost more to groom, because there is more coat to wash, dry, brush and trim. A 75 lb full groom is $214.92 against $165.48 for a 20 lb dog, mobile or not. What mobile removes is the effort of getting them to the appointment at all.
For Goldendoodles, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and other big breeds, that is often the single most practical benefit.
Does mobile grooming help anxious dogs?
Often, by removing stress that happens before grooming starts: no car ride, no unfamiliar building, no other dogs barking nearby, no waiting.
Being straight about the limit: if your dog’s fear is about clippers, dryers, nail care or being handled, those still exist inside the van. Mobile grooming changes the environment, not the equipment.
Being nervous does not raise your price either. Special handling is a $25 service used when a dog genuinely needs substantially more assistance, not something added because a dog is shy.
Can mobile grooming save money over time?
Not per appointment. It costs more per appointment and it is honest to say so.
Where it can even out is consistency. When grooming does not require a half-day plan, appointments are less likely to slide, and that matters most for curly and continuously growing coats.
Here is the arithmetic for a 55 lb doodle at our Essentials pricing:
| Scenario | Grooms per year | Extra work added | Approximate annual cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Every 6 weeks, coat maintained | 9 at $190.20 | None | $1,712 |
| Appointments keep sliding to 10 weeks | 5 at $190.20 | $65 dematting each visit | $1,276 |
The stretched schedule still looks cheaper on paper, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What it costs instead is a dog living in a coat that pulls, and a haircut that has to come off short and start over each time. The saving is not coming from mobile grooming. It comes from keeping the coat in a condition that does not need rescuing.

When a salon is the better choice
Mobile grooming is not right for every household, and there is no reason to pay extra for convenience you do not need.
A salon makes more sense if the lowest price is your priority, if you live close to a groomer you already trust, if your dog enjoys the car, and if drop-off and pickup times fit your day without effort.
If getting your dog to the salon is consistently a problem, your schedule is full, or your dog struggles in busy environments, that is where the extra cost starts earning its place.
How to decide
- Add up your real salon time. Drive there, drop-off, the wait, the drive back. Multiply by how often your dog needs grooming.
- Be honest about the car ride. If grooming day already starts with a struggle, that is part of the cost you are currently paying.
- Count your dogs. The convenience gap widens with each one.
- Factor in coat type. A curly coat needing a groom every 4 weeks means thirteen of these decisions a year. A short coat means five or six.
- Get the actual number. Run your dog through the instant price estimator rather than comparing against a salon’s lowest advertised starting price, which rarely includes everything.

Your price depends on weight, coat type, coat condition and the service you choose. A small dog needing a bath is a different appointment from a large doodle needing a full haircut.

Mobile dog grooming FAQs
How much more does mobile dog grooming cost?
It varies by market and by what each salon includes. At our North Texas Kontota location a full groom runs $153.12 to $289.08 by weight, with the bath included and a $119.99 visit minimum. Compare the complete service rather than a salon’s lowest advertised starting price.
Is mobile dog grooming worth it?
For most households with a tight schedule, a large dog, a nervous or senior dog, or more than one dog, yes. If you live near a groomer you trust and your dog travels well, a salon may suit you better.
Does mobile grooming give a better haircut?
Not automatically. Haircut quality comes down to the groomer’s skill and your dog’s coat. Mobile grooming changes the convenience and the appointment environment, not the standard of the cut.
Do I need to provide power and water?
No. The van carries its own generator and water. All we need is space to park.
How long does a mobile grooming appointment take?
Usually 60 to 120 minutes depending on size and coat condition. You do not wait anywhere, so the appointment length does not cost you your day.
Is mobile grooming better for anxious dogs?
It removes the car ride, the waiting and the other dogs, which helps many nervous dogs. It does not change fear of clippers, dryers or handling.
